Children eagerly scribble down their wish lists, mince pies stand to attention on supermarket shelves, Christmas jumpers emerge from the depths of wardrobes all over the nation. There’s a tangible buzz of anticipation in the air, for Christmas is on its way. 

What better way to get into the festive spirit than to visit one of Devon’s charming Christmas markets or seasonal events, where local makers and artisans gather with their beautiful handcrafted products. We are lucky to have such an abundance of talented creatives in our county who have a real passion for traditional crafts and who endeavour to reintroduce people to the charm and individuality of handmade products. There are a number of fairs, markets and events taking place across Devon in the run up to Christmas, and all are sure to inject some festive warmth into the chilly weeks ahead. Totnes Christmas Market

Where: High Street, Totnes

When: Tuesday evenings in December (5th, 12th, 19th), 3:30-9:30pm

Known for its diverse mix of Christmas stalls, the Totnes Christmas market is back this December, promising a series of truly magical evenings packed full of festive spirit. Each year, locally-based traders and producers flock to Totnes High Street to share their unique, handcrafted goods across over 80 market stalls. Featuring handmade decorations, soaps, jewellery and more, the Totnes Christmas market is all about discovering local artisan talent and appreciating the wonderful craftspeople the town has to offer.

Buckland Abbey’s Christmas Craft and Food Fair

Where: Buckland Abbey, Yelverton

When: Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November, 10am-4pm

Buckland Abbey’s annual Christmas craft and food fair returns this year, with over 40 stalls of the finest local Devon produce. With everything from handmade glass jewellery to homemade fudge, there’ll be a plethora of locally-made artisan delights to tempt you. Not only does the fair promise an array of lovingly produced food, drinks and crafts perfect for that special Christmas gift, but there’ll also be hot food, warm drinks and music to immerse you into the festive spirit. Plus, if you want to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the fair, you can enjoy a wander around the Abbey gardens and admire the stunning views across the Tavy Valley.

Cast Made & Co Pop-up Shop

Where: No. 9, High Street, Totnes

When: Saturday 11th November until Christmas

Cast Made & Co returns this year with their pop-up shop on Totnes High Street, featuring a beautifully curated collection of handmade wares. It's a great place to find unique and locally made gifts, including luxury candles, homewares and fashion. You'll also find some of our Colville Leather belts and accessories on display and ready to buy off the shelf here.

 

Exeter Christmas Market

Where: Exeter Cathedral Green

When: Thursday 16th November – Sunday 17th December

Erected in the shadow of the city’s celebrated cathedral, the popular Exeter Christmas market returns in the middle of November, this year boasting more opportunities for local businesses to get involved. Whether you’re looking for a special Christmas gift or even a treat for yourself, the array of artisan pleasures on offer is sure to satisfy your festive needs. The festive village will have a new layout this year, but will retain its famous continental theme. Offering a huge variety of locally handcrafted gifts and homemade delicacies, this is one Christmas market you won’t want to miss. There’s also hot food and mulled wine aplenty, along with a new bandstand for local bands, carol singers and choirs to perform. Each evening of the market’s residency sees Cathedral Green transformed into a lively winter wonderland: fairy lights twinkling, the smell of hog roast floating between the stalls, the glow of the cathedral a stunning backdrop to the festive entertainment.

Candlelit Dartmouth – Christmas Crafters Market

Where: Old Market Square, Dartmouth

When: Saturday 25th November, 10am-4pm

A festive weekend for the whole family, Candlelit Dartmouth is a great event to get you in the Christmas spirit. A particular highlight of the two-day festive spectacular is the special Christmas Crafters market held in the Old Market Square. Here local artisans will gather to display their traditionally-made gifts, inspiring shoppers with the passion they show for their crafts. There’s nothing better than uncovering a hidden artisan talent in your local area, and Candlelit Dartmouth is a great opportunity to do just that.

Plymouth Christmas Market

Where: City Centre Piazza

When: Thursday 30th November – Thursday 21st December

Artisans and makers from all over the South West will be eagerly anticipating the Plymouth Christmas market, famous across the region for its magical atmosphere and charming festive traditions. The city centre piazza will be transformed into a winter wonderland, with over 60 picturesque log cabin stalls. From intricate handcrafted jewellery, ceramics and scarves, to handmade continental delicacies, the Plymouth Christmas market has it all if you’re a fan of traditional artisanal gifts. You can spend hours browsing the crafts available, immersing yourself in the work of dedicated craftspeople from across the region. And if you’re looking to really make an evening of it, the Bavarian bar (complete with heated seats) and array of festive food stands will certainly help you along.
